Access to Washington D.C.
Washington D.C. is at the intersection of three major
interstate highways, as well as having direct access
by rail (AmTrak) and by air...to two major airports
within a 30 mile radius - the closest being just south
of The Mall at the Ronald Reagan Washington National
Airport. The larger Washington Dulles International
Airport is in nearby Herndon, Virginia. Direct
and quick access to Dulles from the city is west via
Route 267.

The major north-south highway route through the
east coastal region and Washington D.C. is I-95,
which continues north and south from the area. Southern
points down I-95 from Washington include Fredericksburg,
Richmond and Petersburg, Virginia, Fayetteville,
NC, Florence SC, Savannah GA, to Jacksonville, Daytona
and Miami, Florida. Northern connecting points on
I-95 include Baltimore, Maryland, Trenton
NJ, New York City, New Haven CT, Providence RI, Boston
MA, Portsmouth NH, to Portland and Augusta, Maine.
Interstate highway I-270 is an arm of
the east-west I-70; it connects the area to
west and northwest arteries into Maryland, towards
Hagerstown, then north onto Harrisburg PA
via I-81. Northwest of Hagerstown I-70
combines with I-76 to the west, becoming part
of the Pennsylvania Turnpike, a direct route
to Pittsburgh PA and beyond.
Interstate highway I-66 from the downtown area crosses
the I-495 Beltway west of town near Falls
Church. Interstate-66 proceeds west towards
Front Royal and Strasburg VA where it connects up
with I-81, a major north south route with
its southern terminus near Knoxville TN
and the northern end in Scranton PA.
The I-495 Beltway connects the region to all
of the Interstate connectors without having to enter
the city during rush hour periods. However, be advised
the Beltway and major interstate routes all become
congested during peak drive times, use of HOV
lanes are available to cars with multiple passengers,
time usage and directional travel of the lanes change
according to traffic patterns. Follow electronic
signage for occupancy requirements and directional
lane changes. With this in mind, one may wish to
avail themselves the use of the Metro system,
a clean and efficient subway system that connects
many of the major outlying areas with the downtown
and The Mall. Park and Ride areas dot the route through
suburban areas. See the Metro map page for
specific information.
To the east of Washington D.C. is Annapolis, MD
via U.S. Route 50. The eastern shore of Maryland,
Delaware and Virginia are accessible by using the
Chesapeake Bay Bridge at Annapolis.
(See your specific Washington D.C area hotel or attractions
map for more detailed I-64 exiting information.)
