Washington D.C.
The district has lots of attractions within and just outside the city’s boundaries, but if you have the time you may want to do a bit of day-tripping in the beautiful surrounding countryside. Attractions to the south include famous Civil War Battlefields, the historic towns and cities of Fredericksburg, Richmond, Ashland and Petersburg. To the east is historic Annapolis and the Chesapeake Bay. To the north is Baltimore and Frederick, Maryland. To the west are the foothills of the Blue Ridge where surprisingly, the region is one of the east coasts largest wine producing areas, placing Washington D.C. in a ideal location for a day of wine tasting and vineyard tours. The following attractions and wineries are ideal for day trip exploration and most can be reached within an hours drive of The Mall during normal traffic periods.
